At Unwynd, we make a functional sparkling soda, and we put it in an aluminium can. Aluminium cans are harder to source in India, they cost more, and they dent. We knew that going in. We chose one anyway, and we think you should know why, including the parts that are not glamorous.
Why aluminium cans are beautiful
Start with the good, because there is a lot of it.
A can is light. An aluminium can is easier to carry than most other packaging, which matters for a drink meant to go wherever your evening does.
A can gets cold fast. Aluminium chills quickly, so your drink is properly cold sooner.
A can protects what is inside. Our blend is made with active, natural ingredients, and light is hard on them. A can blocks light, which helps protect the colour and the blend from changing before you drink it. For a drink built around clean and natural ingredients, that's an intentional decision.
A can can be recycled again and again. Aluminium does not wear out in the way many other materials do, so the same metal can keep coming back as a can.
And then there is the sound. That crisp clean sound when you open one. No other packaging does it quite the same way, and it has become part of how a good evening starts.
The painful part: dents, cost and the can shortage in India
Now the painful bits.
Cans dent. They are easier to damage than most other packaging, and we have seen it with some of our online orders. We are working on making our shipping boxes more secure, because a dented can is not the experience we want you to have.
Good cans are hard to find in India. If you remember the Diet Coke shortage, that is exactly the problem. It makes cans more expensive than other packaging, and it means our supply timelines can be less predictable than we would like.
Most brands using cans right now are absorbing some version of this. We are not hiding it.

A can does that better than anything else we tried. It protects the blend, it travels well, it keeps its chill, and it makes the first sip feel like an event. For a drink made for the end of a long day, that matters more than the extra cost or the extra effort behind the scenes.
